The Great Chuck Brown Has Passed

Just heard the news that the father of D.C. go-go has died.  He was 75.

Having heard Big G, The Backyard Band and the Soul Searcher horn section bring their funk to New Orleans last Friday, the news lands strangely.  The guys on the stage of Tipitina’s last week are very much the proud children of Mr. Brown and his Soul Searchers.

This man, who invented a musical genre and grooved so hard and for so long, is not yet in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.   The Dave Clark Five, however, are comfortably settled in the shrine.

Argument enough to burn that motherfucker down to the Lake Erie waterline.

  • Thank you, Mr Simon, for taking the time to recognize our beloved Godfather.
DC is not the same without Chuck.
I hope you would consider using your talent to tell the world some of our stories from DC.

  • Laughed out loud at last line of this post. After the bust-out on the shores of Erie, the R&R Hall o’Fame needs relocate to NOLA. Last line of National Register of Historic Places’ sign @ Congo Square, “These African cultural expressions gradually developed into Mardi Gras Indian traditions, the Second line and eventually New Orleans jazz and rhythm and blues.” Some of the greatest gifts our country has given the world can all be traced to New Orleans. Thank you SO much for Treme; as I told Clarke when I ran into him a few weeks ago @ Vaughn’s, hope y’all get as long as you need to tell the story you want to tell…cheers and happy editing/post-production!

  • Not sure that I believe in heaven, but when I hear news like this I like to imagine that somewhere there’s an amazing jam going on and it just got a lot funkier with the arrival of Chuck Brown.
